In It For The Long Haul: Garrett Henderson’s Business Journey

Customer StoriesOctober 06, 2022

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… and it’s often the busiest for the self-employed workforce: when surveyed, 84% of Found users said they expect to work as much, if not more, during the last few months of the year.

Small business owner and Found customer Garrett Henderson is no stranger to the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, and his jump to self-employment gives him the flexibility of being his own boss and caring for his community.

An unexpected career shift

Like millions of Americans during the pandemic, Garrett Henderson made the jump to self-employment in August 2021 after a 15-year career in sales.

“I knew I liked working with my hands and being in front of customers, and I was ready for a change. I fell into hauling haphazardly,” he says.

That’s where Garrett’s two businesses were born. Junk2Dump, a waste management company, and Donation Link, a transport service for charitable donations, serve the Sacramento area.  Both businesses make it easy for Sacramento locals to clean out their homes, keep items out of the landfill, and give back to their communities.

Garrett says it’s been rewarding but hard work over the past 15 months. “The days are long when you’re setting up a business. You’re building it from the ground up, one day at a time.” Garrett’s success didn’t grow overnight; he’s gradually expanded from a single pick-up truck to a larger warehouse and is looking at opening a retail space next year.

Giving back to the community

But Garrett isn’t just passionate about building a business for himself. He’s passionate about building it for his team, too. “It’s been a lot of hard work and fast growth, but I love hiring team members and watching this job change other people’s lives, too.”

Garrett pays his 1099 contractors through Found-to-Found payments and easily tracks his business expenses, making it easy for him to see the day-to-day and big picture of both of his companies.

“My advice for any considering self-employment is to go full force and really dive in.  Don’t just dip your toes in and try it out. Live it. Breathe it. If you maintain a positive attitude and are a problem solver, it will happen.”
