How do I get an EIN?

An EIN (Employer Identification Number) is a 9-digit number the IRS assigns to identify your business for tax purposes.

Getting an EIN is easy and free. Complete a quick online application via the IRS at irs.gov/businesses/employer-identification-number

The whole process takes just a few minutes, and you'll get your EIN right away.

Important: When you apply, download your CP-575 letter as a PDF instead of having it mailed to you. You may need this letter to verify your business with Found, and downloading it means you'll have it instantly instead of waiting weeks for it to arrive.

Here's how:

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I know if I have an EIN?

If you're not sure whether you have an EIN, check any tax documents (e.g. previous tax return) or business licenses you've filed for your business or look for your original CP-575 letter from the IRS.

Do I need an EIN to open a Found account?

Sole proprietors: No, you do not need an EIN to open a Found account. Your account will be opened under your personal name and verified using your Social Security Number.

Single-member LLCs: Yes, you need an EIN to open a Found account. Even though the IRS treats single-member LLCs as "disregarded entities" for tax purposes (i.e. you don't need an EIN for filing taxes), Found and other banks require an EIN to verify your business and open your account.

Multi-member LLCs and corporations: Yes, you need an EIN.

Do I need additional documentation about my EIN to open a Found account?

We'll do our best to verify your EIN automatically during account opening, but in some cases we may ask for additional documentation, such as a CP-575 letter from the IRS.

Learn more: Here are common reasons why automatic verification may fail, along with potential steps on how to resolve each issue.

What if I can’t find my EIN letter?

If you can't find your original CP-575 letter, you can request a replacement (called an LTR-147C) from the IRS:

  1. Call the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933

  2. Hours: Monday–Friday, 7 AM–7 PM local time

  3. Press 1 for English, then 1 for Employer Identification Numbers, then 3 for "If you already have an EIN"

  4. Request an "EIN Verification Letter" (LTR-147C)

  5. Be ready to verify your identity. The IRS agent may ask you to confirm:

    • Your EIN (if you know it)

    • Your business's legal name

    • Your business address

    • Your legal  name as the business owner

Important: The IRS does not email or provide downloadable copies of the LTR-147C for security reasons. You can receive a copy via:
